The Asirgarh Fort or Qila is a celebrated fort situated at a distance of about 20km from the town of Burhanpur in the Satpura Range. Built by Asa Ahir, this famous Indian fortress was once considered to be the “Gateway to Southern India” & connects the valleys of Tapti & Narmada River. |
Owing to its scenic location atop the Satpura Mountains & historical significance, today Asirgarh Fort stands as one of the most popular excursion destinations from Indore.
The Asirgarh Fort built of sedimentary rocks consists of three different lines of construction viz. Asirgarh proper, Kamargarh & Malaygarh. Located inside the fort are a 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva & Jami Masjid that invest the fort with a unique mystical significance.
Adding to the significance of this fortress are close-by attractions like the Asha Mandir dedicated to a Hindu goddess Asha Devi & the tomb of Shah Nomani Asiri thought to be a strong believer of Sufism. Situated to the left of the fort along the bank of Pandhar River is the Moti Mahal, the burial place of Shah Jahan’s beloved Moti Begam. |
