The immensely huge idol of Lord Ganesha measures 25 feet from crown to foot and is considered the largest Ganesha idol in the world. Built by Shri Dadhich, resident of nearby Ujjain city, it is believed that he was ordained in a dream to construct the temple that was built in 1875. It is Indore’s main religious attraction.
This temple, built in 1875, is an important religious attraction of the city. People from different parts of India throng Indore to pay their obeisance to Lord Ganesha at this shrine. As the name suggests, the temple enshrines the largest statue of 'Ganapati' or Lord Ganesha. The most interesting aspect about Bada Ganpati is the extraordinary mix and match of ingredients with which it is made.

The idol is made up of bricks, lime stone and combination of ingredients like jaggery, fenugreek seeds, soil from seven moksha places namely Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika, and Dwaraka, mud from stables of horse, elephant and cow and the powder of Pancharatna or five gems namely diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby and topaz respectively. The holy waters from all major places of pilgrimages were used to bend theses materials.

This massive idol is made of metallic frames like gold, silver, copper, brass, and iron. Looked upon with both wonder and reverence, Bada Ganpati temple remains a sought after attraction in Indore. Since Lord Ganesh is considered as a benevolent God devotees throng here for blessings for success and progress. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great devotion at the temple when the poor and destitute are given clothes and food.
