» Ethereal Chhatris of Indore

Chhatris The term Chhatri meaning canopy implies an elevated dome-shaped pavilion that is an element in Indian architecture for royal funerary sites. Built as memorials for royalty, Chhatris are a basic element of Hindu as well as Mughal architecture. The Maratha rulers of Indore built exquisite Chattris or cenotaphs as memorials for the Holkar rulers.
Built in stone the Chhatris have stood the test of time. Standing elegantly by the banks of River Khan, these chhatris were constructed on the cremation spot of the royal souls. The dome like structures with pyramidal spires on top appear quite fascinating. The Holkars were great rulers and popular with the people. Once defeated by the British they were relegated to Indore where after their deaths the chhatris were erected as constant reminders of their glory.

A cenotaph built over the ashes of Maharani Krishnabai honors the brave female ruler. Two other chhatris commemorate Tukoji Rao II and Shivaji Rao, father and son respectively. These cenotaphs are linked by a common prayer hall with beautiful carved arches and pillars. There are life size statues of the rulers on a high platform by the inner sanctorum.

Chhatri Baag has two compounds and the most beautiful Chhatri is in the memory of Bolia Sahib constructed nearby. At night the Chhatris provide a breathtaking sight when they get illuminated. Glowing against the dark sky they are ethereal tributes to the great Holkars. An artificial lake by the site has been developed along with a fountain and well laid gardens.
