Digambar Jain Temple popularly known as Kaanch Mandir was built by Sir Hukamchand Seth in early twentieth century. An outstanding tourist attraction in Indore, the temple is unique for its mirror work interiors. Doors, ceilings, floors and pillars are all adorned with glass. The decorative ornamentation follows old and medieval Jain style architecture. |
Innovative mosaics of multicolored glass and mirrors create colorful glass paintings depicting stories from Jain scriptures. These striking murals on the temple walls and glass bejeweled walls, ceilings, floors, pillars and even door knobs are a unique feature. Beautiful colored glass wall paintings glittering under chandeliers create an awesome and matchless interior.
The glass temple is an opulent 19th century marvel located close to the Rajwada Palace. The Jain shrine decorated entirely with glass from ceiling to floor is one of a kind temple dedicated to Lord Mahavir whose statues are placed inside glass chambers. Three statues reflecting twenty one times on all sides represent the twenty one Tirthankars inside the main sanctorum.
More than fifty panels of muticolored mirror pieces illustrate stories from Jain mythology, ashta karma and sapta vyasan. Depicting major Jain pilgrimages, the murals cover historic events too. Jain festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Kaanch Ka Mandir. Collective kshma-vani or prayers for forgiveness are organized here. Also the annual rath-yatra on the golden palki starts out from the temple.
