Location: This quaint little village is located in Raisen District of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is 232 Km from Indore 46 km north east of Bhopal, and 10 km from Besnagar and Vidisha. As this is the location of numerous Buddhist monuments, dating from the third century BCE to 12th century CE, its importance has increased rapidly over the time.
History: The history of Sanchi moves around the Buddhist monuments. It is believed that Buddha never visited Sanchi in his lifetime; still one can feel his presence here more effectively than any other Buddhist places. As per record, the numerous Chaityas, Viharas and Stupas of Sanchi were constructed way back in between 3rd century B.C. and 12th century A.D. The glorious history of Sanchi also holds an interesting love story that tells about a beautiful girl called Devi (a pious Buddhist) and King Ashoka. It is believed that King Ashoka fell in love with Devi and for her he constructed such incredible monuments in Sanchi.

Stupas – these are referred to as Stupa No: 1, Stupa No: 2, Stupa No: 3 etc. These Stupas are indeed amazing; hence they are the main tourist attractions in Sanchi.
Ashoka Pillar - marked by its aesthetic beauty and inimitable structural balance, the Ashoka Pillar is situated near the Stupa No: 1. The Great Bowl - carved out of a single piece of stone, this wonderful bowl was used to distribute food to the Buddhist monks living at Sanchi.
Buddhist Vihara - this modern monument is also worth to see.
Gupta Temple - this is one of the earliest known examples of incredible art of Indian temple architecture.

By Air - from Indore, visitors first need to go to Bhopal, which is 46 kms from Sanchi and from there; they can easily reach Sanchi by any taxi or a bus.
By Rail - the closest railway station is Vidisha that is 10 kms from Sanchi.
By Road - There are direct bus services available to Sanchi from Indore. Going by private vehicles is also a great option.
